Nothing accompanies the Florida sun like an ice cream cone and Kilwins has got you covered. Take a stroll from Hidden Gardens down to Las Olas Blvd, be convinced you've earned a special treat, and walk into this amazing chocolate shop. If you're anything like me, you won't be able to leave empty handed. Homemade confectionaries and some really, really good ice cream.... jus...Read Full Post »

I am NOT a vegetarian. I tried it once, but, well, I missed a juicy steak. I went to Sublime, begrudgingly, for a birthday party dinner. It's not that I'm against healthy eating, it just seems so much 'health food' out there decidedly chooses nutrition over taste. I've also noticed, I can create a totally tasteless meal all on my own. So when I...Read Full Post »

Every now and then it rains in South Florida... don't worry, it won't last long! What better thing to do on a rainy afternoon than go see a movie... even better, a movie in IMAX. The AutoNation IMAX 3D Theatre boasts the biggest screen in South Florida and is located downtown at the Museum of Discovery & Science.Read Full Post »

Back when I was initially planting the gardens, before we opened the doors to 'Hidden Gardens at Victoria Park', one of my dear and long time friends, Frank Hagerty, donated a huge truckload of plants to the effort. I remember telling him "Wow! Thanks Frank! You put the garden in Hidden Gardens!" Well, Frank passed away a few days ago, but a very small part of his enormous legacy continues to grow here. Godspeed Frank, you will be missed.

The Fort Lauderdale Boat Show is in October, but Feb. 13-17th, 2014, Miami hosts the International Boat Show and is close enough for a great day out. Here's a little bit from their website:"See what’s new at the Greatest Boat Show in the World! Florida's largest annual event spans three locations—the Miami Beach Convention Center, the New Yacht & Power Boat Show at Sea Isle Marina and Strictly Sail® at Mi...Read Full Post »

Dining-out for a newcomer to Fort Lauderdale can be tough. With so many choices and our beach style strip malls, sometimes it can be difficult to identify a good restaurant merely by sight. This is where the advice of a local comes in handy. Cafe Vico is just such a spot. You might drive by it a million times and not take much notice, but this restaurant is worth in...Read Full Post »

I think Sage is best described as a 'Country French Restaurant'. It has that French cafe feeling, they hold wine tastings every 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month and the service is classic French- superbe. The fare is comfort food at its best. I'd have nearly anything on the menu, but If you need an idea, try the Roasted Duck or Steak Maurice. mmmm....Feeling risque? Go fo...Read Full Post »

I did the legwork and after extensive testing, I've narrowed the choices down to one. The best place to get a pizza delivered to Hidden Gardens is... Giogio's Brick Oven Pizza.
Glad to say these guys do it right, so I've popped a take-out/delivery menu in the kitchen drawers,...Read Full Post »

Tijuana Flats is a funky, Tex-Mex burrito and taco restaurant. The food takes about the same amount of time to arrive as the Arbys or Burger King just down the street, costs about the same, but it's probably healthier for you and definitely tastes better.
There are a few al fresco tables if you...Read Full Post »

Go below the waves on a Sea Experience! The SCUBA shop is right down near Las Olas and the Beach. Reported as the premier dive center in South Florida, you can get your PADI licence here, go out for some snorkeling or stay dry and see the reef through a glass bottom boat.
The water is warm year round, and the wreck diving trips are said to be a lot of fun, so jump in...Read Full Post »

Being a local, you get to know a few places. Croissan'Time has been my favorite cafe-bakery, very close to Hidden Gardens, for a very, very long time. Showcasing international foods, gourmet-pastries, fresh bread and the best croissants anywhere bar none, this place can make a Sunday morning breakfast feel like a special treat.
