By popular demand, I've had quite a few people ask me about bicycle rentals, so I decided it's time to post about it. Fort Lauderdale has a couple options for bicycle rentals and scooter rentals... and motorcycle rentals if you're feeling really adventurous...
One option is to take advantage of Fort Lauderdales public bicycle rentals. You may have seen these in other cities and it works just the same here. It couldn't be simpler, just walk up and take the bike for a few hours or longer.
Find a location where they are available here: https://broward.bcycle.com/" target="_blank">Broward B-Cycle
If you are looking to keep the bike for a few days though, you might want to check out the Trek Bicycle Store up on Sunrise Blvd about 2 minutes drive North of us. They are nice guys in there that run the shop and its convenient to our location. You could even walk up there it's not too far.
Have fun out there!!!

...And it is really close!! Even closer to Hidden Gardens than Whole Foods Market, Victoria Park locals are thrilled to welcome Trader Joe's to the neighborhood.
I won't get into it too much, but, great food, low prices what more could you want??

I just went to Chima for the first time a few weeks ago. I'd heard about it, but the opportunity arose, with some friends who were game, so we went. First I have to say, Chima is a restaurant experience, not merely a place to eat. Having said that, it is also one of the most beautiful and elegant restauraunts in Fort Lauderdale.
5-6 waiters are in constant rotation around the tables, circulating succulent varieties of skewered, roasted meats from their glass front ovens and, at the flip of a coin will endlessly carve off slices at your table. Not only that, Chima has one of the most incredible Salad Bars I have ever seen in my life. The quality of this restaurant is absolutely top notch and worth every penny. What a special treat. It was so much fun and a few of us rated it in the top 10 dinners ever. Price is about $50 per plate, so bring a healthy appetite. Chima is walkable from Hidden Gardens, but you might need to take a taxi back.

Every now and again, one does get the sniffles. In the event that you might want to see a doctor, but don't need to go to the emergency room, the CVS up on Sunrise Blvd, next to the Galleria Mall, has a great new walk-in clinic. They have doctors on site who can write you a prescription and they have private examination rooms. While the Florida sun usually cures what ails you, it's good to know about the CVS minute clinic for peace of mind.

"For some cities, the desire to build a major arts complex is a lifetime dream. For the City of Fort Lauderdale and Broward County, that dream came true with the development of the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.
From concept to fruition, this world-class performing arts center was built with years of passion, planning and dedication. The passion began nearly four decades ago, when Fort Lauderdale’s War Memorial Auditorium, built in the 1940s, and the Parker Playhouse, constructed in the late 1950s, struggled to meet the changing performing arts needs of this expanding South Florida cultural community.
Recognizing the need for a more viable venue -- one with a much greater seating capacity, spacious backstage and meeting facilities -- and more than one stage, visionaries set forth to turn their dream into reality.
Although it would take nearly 30 years, the Broward Center for the Performing Arts opened it's doors on February 26, 1991 offering the community a future of the best in performing arts and entertainment." - From their website

So I've written about Pizza before, but I'm revisiting the subject as I've come to love Luigi's as 'the' place to get a Pizza. I didn't include Luigi's originally because they don't deliver, however, the problem has been solved by Delivery Dudes, whom I've blogged about in a past post (see link, and I have 'free delivery' coupons from the D.Dudes, a $5 value, just ask me). Now to the Pizza... It's a handmade, crispy New York style thin crust but not a flat bread or powdered with too much flour. They offer a superb selection of toppings from the obvious to the slightly daring and integrity to the ingredients is second to none. Clearly nothing comes from a can here, like I've suspected from so many pizza parlours. The Four Cheese pizza is an excellent choice and I would recommend their signature Margherita Napoletana and the Fradiavolo. These pizza pies are complemented well by Luigi's coal fired chicken wings with sauteed onion sauce, or a ceasar salad with thick shaved parmesian. Luigi's is just down on the corner of SE15th Ave and Las Olas Blvd, an easy walk and worth it for their good selection of beer and wine to pair.

Yes, we have 24hr. Walgreens and 7-11's close by, but the very closest place (just two blocks away) to get that last minute item is 'The Tiny Little Tea Leaf'. This is a real 'Mom and Pop' convenience store, just round the corner, owned and operated by Ruth and John. Great if you want to pop-out quickly for a bottle of wine, beer or soda. Not only that, they have a little deli for fresh sandwiches and daily hot soups. (my favorite is 'the Russian Bear'- roast beef and creamy horseradish sauce on a kaiser roll -mmmmm!). It's not a huge place, as the name implies, but they've got the basic toiletries, odds and ends, paperback books, ice creams and more. An eclectic selection for sure! Being the owner of my own small business, I know what it takes and I like knowing I've spent my money here. Great little family run businesses like this are becoming scarce, so make sure to check them out!

Holiday Park is an actual, real park located in the northwest corner of the Town of Victoria Park, confusing I know. Aside from catching a game of tennis, Holiday Park is a nice place to take a walk and get some exercise, many of our guests have enjoyed using the public facilities there.
Here's what the City of Fort Lauderdale.gov sais about the Tennis Center:
"The Jimmy Evert Tennis Center (JETC), located in Fort Lauderdale’s Holiday Park, is known throughout the world as one of the nation’s finest public tennis facilities. Its rich and distinguished history includes everything from teaching children how to improve their serves and backhands to contributing to the development of tennis professionals such as Chris Evert and Jennifer Capriati. The Center features 18 lighted clay courts, three hard courts, a clubhouse with locker and shower facilities, players’ lounge and a Tennis Hall of Fame. The Jimmy Evert Tennis Center is located just minutes from the world famous Fort Lauderdale Beach [and seconds away from Hidden Gardens!] in the lush tropical setting of Holiday Park."

I could go on and on with high praises of Las Olas Blvd, but I'm sure there's already a few blogs out there doing that. Take a stroll, just a few blocks south of Hidden Gardens and see what you'll find! These two comments below wrap it up nicely:
"Las Olas is often described as the jewel in Fort Lauderdale's crown, and rightly so. It's hard to imagine any other area that has so much to offer its visitors and local residents. Fabulous restaurants, fashion stores, galleries, spas and salons - just about everything you need is right here on Las Olas." - iamlasolas.com
"Twinkling lights set the stage each evening for South Florida’s most architecturally unique, authentic, and eclectic shopping and dining district. Stroll the boulevard, duck in and out of our cool breezeways, and be delighted by what you’ll discover - nowhere else in Florida will you find over 30 al fresco dining options, 10 major international art galleries, 2 world class museums, 65 unique shops filled with fashion, accessories, gifts, and more." - tripadvisor.com

The Fresh Market is a newer supermarket to Fort Lauderdale and I have to say, I find myself going there more and more. It's very clean and well organized, but what really sets it apart is the excellent selection of prepared meals. Always 10 different freshly made salads ready to go, fresh sushi, fresh bread and meats and a huge buffet of prepared warm dishes for take-out. This can really be a life saver when one finds oneself in a 'I don't feel like cooking' moment... The Fresh Market is on the corner of NE4th St. and Federal Highway.
My go to Supermarket for all the basics, is on the corner of NE15th Ave. and Sunrise Blvd. It's about 3 times larger than Fresh Market and both are about the same distance from Hidden Gardens. It's great to have them both so close by and I should add, across the street from Publix, on NE15th Ave, is a 24hr Walgreens Pharmacy, -also a nice thing.
If however, you are feeling organic produce is more your thing, just a few minutes further north on Federal Highway and NE20th St. is Whole Foods Market, a health food/ organic super market... A little pricier but, well, you know... get your veggies here

You arrive to your new place, put your bags away, sit down and relax. Now, what's on TV? Rather than fumble through the 1000 or so channels available on Comcast, I've listed the High-Definition channels we get below for a little easier access. Relax and watch a movie on HBO (Ch.416 and Ch.480-485) or listen to some music, from Jazz to Blues to Reggae (on Ch.800-843). For all the other channels... you're on your own.

Sushi has come a long way since a slice of raw fish was draped over a bit of wasabi and a ball of sticky rice. If you love Sushi like me and want to be completely blown away by the imagination of a sushi chef,
Sushi Rock is for you.
It is typically crowded and the tables are very close together, but it all adds up to the hip ambience of this cool little sushi restaurant. You might not recognize the sushi rolls by their classic names, but alternately, find rolls called 'Pink Floyd', 'Red Hot Chili Peppers' or 'Strawberry Fields Forever' (all of which I highly recommend). Luckily, the creative sushi fusion from Sushi Rock is right around the corner from Hidden Gardens, just a 10 minute walk.

...gardener... I wear a lot of hats at Hidden Gardens and I've spent lots of time designing and polishing our website. Over the past few days, I've updated a few things and created our new 'Guest Sign-In' page. Look for it on the lower right hand corners of each of the apartment descriptions or in the "More" drop-down menu.
Once you've made a reservation with us, you'll have access to our password protected pages. You'll find arrival details on our new 'Welcome!' page and see some instructions for leaving a review on our new 'Write a Review' page.
In your travels through our web pages, if you ever find a link that's not working or experience any difficulty, please let me know!

I love delivery. If I'm exhausted and get to sit down to a 5 star meal, while flicking through the TV channels, and not hashing out a meal in the kitchen... I feel I've cheated the system somehow and won. It is a guilty pleasure for sure. Delivery Dudes have picked up on this sentiment, so now I can eat out just about anywhere and never leave the couch... This company specializes in food delivery from restaurants that would not normally deliver. But wait- you feel like sushi and your significant other feels like Italian? No problem, you can order online, from more than one restaurant and Delivery Dudes will bring them both at the same time.
Wow! These dudes are good!

Ok, ok, we have two Starbucks within close proximity, so don't panic. One to the northeast across the street from the Galleria Mall on East Sunrise Blvd and the other is to the southwest, on the corner of Federal Hwy and Broward Blvd. I'd go to the one up on E Sunrise because there's lots of parking up there and not much at the Broward/Federal shop. Ok, all better now? phew.
